Alice Springs footballer needs eight goals to topple absent leadersFOUR quarters of football stands between South Alice Springs' Shaun Cusack from claiming this year's leading goal-kicker award.
That and the Pioneer's Dillon Measures.
The Alice Springs footballer Measures is third on the AFL Central Australia goal-kicking leaderboard and he is in the box seat to overtake Cusack and Federals' Stephen Brooks and claim the prize for himself.
Measures, with 68 goals this season, can bypass Brooks (69) and Cusack (75) today with their teams having scheduled byes in the final round of home-and-away action.
The key forward Measures' 68 goals came in a rush two rounds ago when he bagged 10 majors against Rovers. His average is five goals per game.
The race to the top of the goal-kicking is but one of many sub-plots in today's final home-and-away round in Alice Springs.
Measures can win the goal-kicking, help his team defeat Hermannsburg and ensure Pioneer claims the minor premiership over rivals Wests.
Community team Yuendumu have a fight on their hands to retain their spot in the top four.
Should the Magpies lose to Wests today and fifth-placed countrymen Anmatjere get up against lowly Rovers then Yuendumu's season is over.
Still, the Cowboys will need to win big because while the four points will see them draw level with the Magpies (40), they need more points than against to boost their percentage of 118.59 to over 126.75.
Meanwhile, there is a strong Aboriginal contingent in the AFLCA representative squad for a post-season match against Katherine in Katherine on October 4.
All 10 AFLCA clubs have representatives with the community teams providing 25 players to the town teams' 22.
The squad will be culled to a final 24 as October draws near.
