IT WASN’T from a totally impossible angle this time, or even from a funny little grubber kick through crowded bodies that netted Collingwood’s Leon Davis this week’s nomination for the AFL’s goal of the year. But it was just as spectacular all the same.
Davis’ nomination came from a monster bomb from beyond the 50m arc on the boundary in the third quarter in the ’Pies win over St Kilda on Saturday night. Such was the ‘purchase’ Davis had on the kick, the ball went through the goals post high in a seemingly slow-motion drop.
And Cyril Rioli showed why he has ‘star potential’ written all over him with an eye-catching one-handed mark against the Brisbane Lions in Launceston in Saturday.
The grab, which came from a pass from Chance Bateman, won the Northern Territorian his second mark of the year nomination.
Davis and Rioli's nominations this week are their third such in AFL goal and mark of the year this season.

Davey out for season
MEANWHILE, agile Melbourne forward Aaron Davey will miss the remainder of the season due to injury.
Davey missed last Friday night’s huge loss to Geelong with a foot injury but subsequent X-rays have indicated he also has a stress fracture in his heel, forcing him out for the final three rounds.
