A FOOTBALL match to commemorate NAIDOC Week and the life of a former female footballer will be held in Perth tomorrow.
West Australian Women's Football League Team of the Decade member and State player Elizabeth 'Lil' Kickett will be honoured at the second 'Yorga's Koodjal Kadadjiny' game at Lathlain Park.
That match, which starts at 2.30pm, sees the top female footballers play in a WAWFL all-stars match: An Indigenous team and a WAWFL representative team. The winning side will be presented with the Lil Kickett Memorial Shield.
The match forms part of the league's NAIDOC Week celebrations and also the WAWFL's 25th year.
Kickett passed away in 2006 due to breast cancer. She was an integral part of WA women's football.
Born in Wilcannia in New South Wales in 1971, Kickett was a prominent member of the women's football community in WA. She played for Gosnells for four years from 1997, and was the club's captain during that time where she won several club awards.
Kickett was selected as an emergency player for the 1988-1997 Team of the Decade and gained full selection in the 1998-2007 team. She played in the WAWFL State team in 1998 and 1999.
Kickett was on the WAWFL State team sub-committee, was the fooball manager at Gosnels and WAWFL vice-president in 2000.
Through the match, the WAWFL is raising awareness of breast cancer -- the most common cancer experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous women alike. A gold coin donation for entry collected at the gate on game day will go towards the Breast Cancer Foundation.
It will be the second time the Yorgas game will be held; the first was in 2010. The WAFC is on board for this year's match.
The game's full Nyoongar name is 'Yorga's Koodjal Kadadjiny' which when translated to English means 'Women's Two Way Learning'.
The game's best-on-ground player will be presented with the Sharron Woods Medal after the player who has made a significant contribution to women's football in WA.
The numbers of Indigenous women in WA women's football continues to grow. The current Debbie Lee medallist (best female player in the country) is Kirby Bentley, who plays for East Fremantle in the WAWFL.
Interest in representing the Indigenous team was strong among the football community. The league organised a selection match on May 26, from which the final team was chosen.
The WAWFL All-Stars were nominated by their coaches and selected by the Yorga's match committee.
There are nine WAWFL teams: Claremont Piranhas, Coastal Titans, East Fremantle, Joondalup Falcons, Mt Lawley, Peel, SNESA Angels, South Fremantle and Swan Districts. The league has a strong representation of Indigenous women across its clubs.
During May's national under-18s carnival, several women played for WA, including Rakita Bennell, Sharni Kittow, Jesie McDonald, Synarah Murphy, Kira Phillips (who won All-Australian selection), Rhonda Williams and Jessikah Woods.
There will be a curtain-raiser before the big game between the WAWFL and State Schoolgirls.
