THE two Indigenous footballers who played in last season's drawn AFL Grand Final and subsequent replay have been added to the site under the "Records > AFL" link (above).
Collingwood pair Leon Davis and Sharrod Wellingham join the long line of Indigenous footballers who have played on the big stage in that last Saturday in September, or the first day in October, as it turned out last year.
And as it turned out, a tweaking of the rules saw Davis, who did not play in the replay, being awarded a premiership medal, becoming the first AFL player to have won a premiership without actually playing on the day.
The Tuesday following the drawn grand final (Sept. 28), AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou said:
"It is the AFL's view that any player who has taken the field in either the Grand Final, or the Grand Final replay, has had a role in his club winning the premiership. As such, the AFL will present a premiership medal to the 22 members of the winning team ... as well as any player who played in last week's team and misses this week's game for any reason."
Also of note, both the drawn and replay grand finals have been recorded as the "114th Grand Final of the Australian Football League".
Finally, added to the site are the 76 Indigenous players in the AFL this year, in the "AFL > 2011" link.
Corrections and/or additions always welcome.
