History of DBA

In 1963, Mr. A.W. Sugden, the then Hon. Secretary of the Victorian Deaf Basketball Club, submitted a plan for the formation of a new basketball association. The inaugural meeting took place at the NSW Deaf clubrooms on Monday 28 December 1964 and it was at this meeting that the Constitution and Rules of  Association were adopted. The delegates present at this meeting were D. Edwards and K. Gleeson (NSW) and, J. McRae and A. Sugden (VIC).

The objects of the Association, first developed in 1964,were:

-          to promote interest and coordinate national and international Basketball activities

-          to have interstate competitions from time to time

A letter of application was forwarded to the ADSF to be admitted as a member, on the proviso, that the new association would have three member states by the next Games. A second meeting was held at the home of Mr. F. Sandon in Sydney on 24 March 1967. Delegates representing three states (Qld, NSW and VIC) were present. A shield was donated by Mr Graham Ball (VIC) for the winning State basketball team in the Australian Deaf Games and it was named the “Graham D. Ball Shield”.

Basketball was first involved at the Australian Deaf Sports Carnival in Sydney, 1964/65. Only two states took part.. Victoria defeated  NSW 42 to 31. A.D.B.B.A. joined the ADSF in 1966 and the Association staged its first official basketball competition at the Australian Deaf Games in Melbourne, 1967/68. Five teams competed and resulted in: 1st: Victoria; 2nd: NSW; 3rd: Qld; 4th: SA and 5th: WA.
