BOQ Redbacks’ Women’s Team First Win

The Bank of Queensland Redbacks’ Women’s State Basketball League team had their first win of the year against the Stirling Senators 76 to 73.

Marita Payne was their highest scorer with 18 along with 13 rebounds.

Forward Jessica Jakens scored 13 along with 10 rebounds and three assists while point-guard Rachel Lisch also scored 13 and had seven assists, seven steals and six rebounds.

However, they lost their second game of the weekend in a thrilling encounter against the Lakeside Lightning 63 to 64.

Shooting guard Stephanie Sauter scored 16 along with three rebounds and three assists while Payne also scored with 16 along with 20 rebounds and six blocked-shots.

They now have one win and three losses and are in 11th place in the 12-team competition.

The BOQ Redbacks’ Men’s team squandered an 11-point three-quarter time lead going down to the Stirling Senators 91 to 93.

In an impressive debut for the Redbacks, after finishing his National Basketball League season with the Melbourne Tigers, swing-man Bennie Lewis was their top-scorer with 26 along with six assists and four rebounds.

Point-guard Joel Wagner had 14 assists and 12 points while shooting guard Jarrad Prior scored 17.

The Redbacks’ men lost a tough encounter against the unbeaten Lakeside Lightning 87 to 95.

Power-forward Michael Vigor top-scored with 22 along with 14 rebounds.

Lewis scored 18 and had five rebounds, five assists and three blocked-shots while centre Justin Brown scored 16 and had 10 rebounds and five blocked-shots.

The BOQ Redbacks’ men now have two wins and three losses and are in ninth-place in the 14-team competition.

The action continues this Saturday when the Redbacks take on the Rockingham Flames at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre, with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
