Redbacks Quarter-Final Loss

The Perth Redbacks men’s State Basketball League team lost its first quarter final play-off game in the best of three series against the Cockburn Cougars 98 to 104.

As the loss was at the Redbacks’ home venue of Belmont Oasis Leisure and Aquatic Centre, they will now have to win the remaining two games at the Cougars home-venue to proceed to the semi-finals.

Forward Adrian Majstrovich was the Redbacks highest scorer with 30 along with 16 rebounds.

Shooting guard Ryan Neill scored 17, while forward Daniel Maddox had 11 along with six rebounds.

Cougars’ forward Stanley Ocitti was the game-high scorer with 32 while guards Ty Harrelson and Grant Davey scored 24 and 19 respectively.

Redbacks’ National Basketball League player Joel Wagner sustained an ankle injury in the last quarter which is likely to see him unavailable for at least the remainder of the quarter-final series.

Wagners’ injury is compounded by the unavailability of Redbacks’ and Perth Wildcat player Jesse Wagstaff in any of the quarter-final games due to his selection in the Australian Boomers team.

However, despite this the Redbacks’ coach David Harris remains optimistic about the possibility of turning the quarter-final series around and winning the remaining two-games.

“While we are obviously disappointed not to win the first game of the series, we will make some minor adjustments to get a few things right and enable us to challenge for wins in those games against the highly competitive Cougars outfit”, he said.

The second game in the quarter-final series is at 7.30PM on Saturday 6th August at the Wally Hagan Stadium, Starling Street Hamilton Hill.

The third game will only be played if required at midday on Sunday 7th August at the Wally Hagan stadium.
