REDBACKS WINNING FORM CONTINUES

This weekend saw both the Perth Redbacks’ State Basketball League men’s and women’s teams continue their winning form from the previous weekend again defeating their two opponents, Lakeside Lightning and Wanneroo Wolves. The men’s team has now won four games in a row and remains in 11th place, although they now have an outside chance of getting into the top 8 and seeing finals action if they continue their winning form, while the women have won five games in a row, moved from 5th to 3rd place and are now almost certain of seeing finals action.
In their game against 5th place Lakeside the Redbacks’ men, in a 16-point turnaround, came from 9 points down in the last quarter to win 102 to 95. Small forward Luke Mackay continued his strong form since coming back from the United States College basketball competition scoring 38 points at a field goal shooting percentage of 41% while taking 17 rebounds and making 9 assists. Shooting guard Ryan Neill ably backed Mackay up scoring 18 points while making 3 assists, 3 blocked shots, 1 steal and 3 rebounds.
The Redbacks’ men beat the 8th placed Wolves 92 to 87 in a tough encounter at the Wolves stadium that went right down to the wire. Forward Ryan De Glanville played strongly scoring 15 points at an amazing field goal percentage of 70 while taking 19 rebounds and making 4 assists. Shooting guard Jarrad Prior scored 24 points at 44% while taking 8 rebounds and making 3 assists and 1 steal.
In her 250th game the ever-reliable Forward Brooke Hiddlestone, together with Centre Christine Boyd, were again the stand-out players for the Redbacks’ women in their win 74 to 58 point win against Lightning. Hiddlestone scored 24 points at 56% while also taking 10 rebounds while Boyd scored 21 points at 53% while also taking 10 rebounds.
In the women’s 80 to 65 win over the Wolves recently returned shooting guard and former Perth Lynx player Narelle Henry played strongly scoring 19 points at 54% while taking 12 rebounds and making 2 assists. Hiddlestone also contributed to the win strongly scoring 22 points at 50% together with 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
This Friday will see the Perth Redbacks play the Willetton Tigers at the Belmont Oasis, with the women’s game starting at 6:30 PM and the men’s game starting at 8:30 PM. The match against the Tigers represents a real challenge for the Redbacks’ men’s team as the Tigers are currently sitting in top position and their line-up includes current Wildcats’ players Paul Rogers and Liam Rush together with former Wildcat Clint Reid. Similarly, the Tigers’ women’s team sits in 2nd place on the ladder and will represent a real threat to the Perth women’s 5 game winning strike.
