A Winning Attitude

Missing selection for the Under 14's Men's team hasn't deterred young Nick Payne from his goal of one day playing for the Perth Redbacks.

In fact it has spurred his desire to work harder on areas of his game that need improvement.

Nick (13) has been playing basketball at domestic level for the past six years and last October came down to the Club to train and try-out for the 2013 season.

He immediately impressed the coaching staff with his attitude and his willingness to take on advice prompting an invitation to play in the BWA State Championships and eventually to accept a "train-on" position with the team.

The Under 14's Men currently sits at the top of the premiership table remaining undefeated after 11 games and it was this richness of talent that, in part, made it difficult for Nick to make his way into the side.

But rather than seeking another Club, Nick has remained committed to the Redbacks and has rarely missed a training session or attending a game to support his mates.

"I have a goal of improving enough to be able to play next season," said Nick

"WABL is alot higher skill level (than domestic) and the training is alot harder and intense which I like. I have learned so much while training with the Redbacks."

Nick attends the Carey Baptist College where he is in Year 7. When he is not at school or playing basketball he likes to play the drums and video games.

"One day I would like to go to America and watch the NBA, especially Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers."

Meanwhile Nick will work on his game and on his ambition of playing for the Redbacks in 2014.

When kids often pick up their bat and ball at the first hint of things not going their way, it is refreshing that we have quality individuals, like Nick, who are focussed on achieving personal ambitions through hours of practice and -at the same time- contribute considerably to the team's overall success.

"I have made many friends at the Redbacks, the coaches are also pretty cool and I want to be a part of the Club for a long time."
