Redbacks Men Defeat Slammers

The BOQ Redbacks Men’s State Basketball League team had a strong 101 to 94 win over the South West Slammers in Eaton.

They overcame a six-point half-time deficit with a 28-point third quarter and 25-point final quarter effort to secure the strong victory.

This now means that the Redbacks’ men have achieved the rare triple of securing three wins from all of their country away-game matches, having previously beaten the Goldfield’s Giants and Geraldton Buccaneers at their home venues.

Swing-man Bennie Lewis continued his strong form top-scoring with 23 while also bringing down six rebounds and making five assists and two steals.

In his 200th game shooting guard Jarrad Prior scored 21, which included hitting five from nine three-point shots, as well as making four steals and two assists and bringing down three rebounds.

Point-guard Joel Wagner scored 18 and had five assists and three rebounds while power-forward Michael Vigor scored 11 and had nine rebounds.

The win sees the Redbacks’ men move up one place to fourth in the 14-team competition with six wins and three losses.

The BOQ Redbacks’ women’s team lost to the Slammers 52 to 63 in a tough encounter in which they had their chances to win but could not capitalise on their opportunities.

Point-guard Rachel Lisch top-scored for the Redbacks with 21 while bringing down five rebounds and making three assists.

Centre Marita Payne scored nine along with nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Small-forward Jess Jakens scored seven and had three rebounds while forward Tarsha Fletcher also scored seven and brought down two rebounds and had two assists.

The BOQ Redbacks’ women’s team now has two wins and five losses and is in ninth-place in the 12-team competition.

The action continues tonight at the BOQ Redbacks’ home venue of Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre against Mandurah Magic, with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.

The Redbacks’ and Magic’s Women’s Teams both have the same win/loss record, which means this game is vital for either team to get closer to securing a final top eight spot.

The Redbacks’ men and Magic men also have the same win/loss record, which will mean both teams will be fighting to secure the vital fourth position on the ladder.

Redbacks fans are encouraged to come down en masse to support both teams in these vital encounters, at which the Redbacks State Basketball teams will be wearing their new playing-tops for the first time at a home-game.
