Under 18 Men’s Team Wins Redback Classic

Congratulations goes to the Daimler Trucks’ Redbacks under 18 men’s team for winning their division of the Redback Classic held last weekend, after beating Cockburn Cougars 52 to 34 in the grand final. They got to there with a 63 to 19 win over Northam, a narrow 29 to 30 loss over Cougars and a 40 to 34 win over WA Country.

Congratulations also goes to the under 14 women’s team, who came in second-place in the six-team competition after losing in the Grand Final to the tough Willetton Tigers combination 23 to 46. They made the finals after playing strongly in the qualifying rounds starting with a tight 23 to 21 win over Perry Lakes Hawks. This was followed by a 33 to 24 win against Mandurah Magic, a 20 to 38 loss to Willetton Tigers and a 32 to 23 win against the Albany Raiders.

The Redbacks’ under 11 men’s team had one win and three losses to come fifth in the six-team competition. They lost their first game to the Wanneroo Wolves Green 12 to 35. However, they bounced back to record a heart-stopping 24 to 23 win against the East Perth Eagles. In subsequent rounds they lost to Rockingham 10 to 34 and Wanneroo Wolves White four to 39.

The under 12 men played well with a series of close games, but were unfortunate not to record a win. They had a narrow 30 to 34 loss to Wanneroo Wolves green, a 28 to 41 loss to Mandurah Magic, a 31 to 39 loss to the East Perth Eagles and a 23 to 40 loss to Rockingham Flames. They came in eighth place.

The under 12 girl’s team fought hard throughout the weekend but lost four to 54 to Perry Lakes Hawks, 17 to 35 to Cockburn Cougars, 21 to 42 to Mandurah Magic and 16 to 62 against Rockingham Flames. They came in seventh place.

The under 13 men’s team went down to the Perry Lakes Hawks 13 to 57, bounced back to beat the East Perth Eagles 29 to 26, lost to Rockingham Flames 13 to 28 and then drew with Mandurah Magic 24 apiece. This saw them with 1.5 wins from four games and in fourth-place in the five-team competition.

The under 14 (1) men’s team were unlucky to make the grand final having won three games and lost one, which saw them in third place in the nine-team competition. It was a narrow 27 to 29 loss to the ultimate championship winners, Wanneroo Wolves that caused them to miss out. In their remaining games they beat Northam 56 to 14, Cockburn Cougars (1) 51 to 28 and Mandurah Magic 52 to 16.

The under 14(2) men’s team lost to Willetton Tigers 13 to 47, beat Cockburn Cougars (2) 35 to 27, lost to Cockburn Cougars (1) 23 to 52 and lost 24 to 63 to Wanneroo Wolves. They ended with one win and three losses and in seventh place out of nine teams.

The under 15 men went down in their first game to Perry Lakes Hawks 28 to 35. However, they bounced back to beat Cockburn Cougars 34 to 27, Mandurah Magic 29 to 22 and Bunbury Slammers 29 to 21. Their three-win one-loss record saw them in third-place in the seven-team competition.

The under 16 men’s team’s record of two wins and two losses saw them end in fourth place in the six-team competition. They lost 35 to 48 to Wanneroo Wolves, won 42 to 18 against Belmont Blues, lost 30 to 46 to Willetton Tigers and won 33 to 31 against Rockingham Flames.

The under 16 men’s division also saw the Belmont Blues team, which competes in the Redbacks’ Domestic Competition at Belmont Oasis, compete. They lost 17 to 86 to Willetton Tigers, 18 to 42 to the Redbacks, 16 to 61 to Perry Lakes Hawks and 21 to 108 to Wanneroo Wolves. The boys, most of whom were eligible for a younger age-group, played with tremendous spirit and all enjoyed the carnival.

The Redbacks under 16 women opened the carnival with a 38 to 21 win over East Perth Eagles. They then lost to Mandurah Magic (1) 14 to 24, beat Mandurah Magic (2) 51 to 21 and lost to Cockburn Cougars 16 to 46. They ended with two wins and two losses and in third place in the six team competition.

The under 18 women’s team lost in the qualifying rounds to Willetton Tigers 14 to 40, Mandurah Magic nine to 27 and East Perth Eagles eight to 28. They lost their semi-final against the Magic 10 to 38. This saw them in fourth place.

The under 20 men lost in the qualifying rounds 28 to 46 to Willetton Tigers, 13 to 41 to East Perth Eagles and 20 to 38 to Kalamunda Eastern Suns. They were beaten in the semi-finals by the Eagles 35 to 46. They ended in fourth place.
