Jakens, O’Sullivan and Ellis selected in State Under-20s Teams
Perth Redbacks’ Jessica Jakens (JJ), Gabby O’Sullivan and Ben Ellis have been selected to represent the Western Australian under 20s women’s and men’s teams respectively in the 2013 National Basketball Championships.
JJ, Gabby and Ben have come through the Redbacks’ Western Australian Basketball League programme and represented the Redbacks in the State Basketball League.
JJ and Gabby have been playing in the same basketball teams since under 11s junior competition and are excited at this continuing following their both being selected to the Western Australian team.
“I am really looking forward to playing with Gabby at this level of competition and in putting in a strong contribution in what I hope will be a successful carnival for our entire team”, JJ said.
Gabby is excited at being a part of the National Championships and saw the event as important part in her ongoing development as a basketball player.
“This is an opportunity to gain experience in playing at the national level of basketball and to be a part of what I believe will be a highly competitive team,” she said.
Ben was unlucky not to compete in the 2012 under 20s National Championships after being initially selected, but then having to withdraw due to a serious ankle injury.
However, he was philosophical about this and is looking forward to the National Championships and the year ahead.
“Being selected to the State team was a great positive reinforcement as to where my basketball is now at after the disappointment of last year.
The Championships commence in Launceston today and continues until 23rd February, with the Western Australian women’s team playing South Australia and the men’s team Tasmania.
