The Perth Redbacks' Men’s under 13s team won the State Basketball Championships with a stunning 31 to 19 grand-final win against the Rockingham Flames.

With just three minutes to go and the result on a tightrope with the Redbacks up 17 to 16, point-guard Beau Tuccio stepped up to score a three-pointer from a daring set-play.

That set up a momentum in which solid team defence, combined with a Jordan Herbert three and two-pointer, along with two successive two-pointers from Kyle Bowen, saw the Redbacks secure an unassailable 29 to 17 lead with less than a minute to go.

The Redbacks' Men’s road to the grand-final saw them with three wins and one loss in the qualifying rounds after beating the Willetton Tigers 31 to 28, Stirling Senators 29 to 22 and Cockburn Cougars 38 to 33 while losing to this year’s Western Australian Basketball League Grand Finalists Perry Lakes Hawks 24 to 29.

The grand-final against the Flames happened as a result of the Flames unexpectedly beating the Hawks 28 to 27 in one semi-final, while the Redbacks beat the Wanneroo Wolves 43 to 41 in the other semi-final.

Redbacks' forward Jordan Herbert was named the Most Valuable Player of the grand Final.

The under 13 Redbacks' Women’s team had one win and two losses in their State Championships campaign, which saw them narrowly miss out on a top-two semi-final spot after finishing in third-place in the four-team conference.

Their first game against the Kalamunda Eastern Suns saw a narrow three-point loss in a see-saw affair that went right down to the line.

However they missed out on a semi-final place after losing to the tough Tigers combination 19 to 40.

The Redbacks also entered a team in the under 13 Men’s Division Two championships which had two wins, one draw and a loss.

Their draw was in the opening game against the Tigers with the score locked at 26 apiece.

They then beat the Wolves 40 to 24 and the Stirling Senators 49 to 12.

However, their subsequent 12 to 27 loss to the Hawks and 18 to 36 loss to the Cougars saw them narrowly miss out on the semi-finals after coming third in the five-team conference.
