Redbacks Slam Slammers

The Perth Redbacks Men’s State Basketball League team had a 112 to 82 home-game win over the Collie Crane Hire Slammers.

The 13th placed Slammers took the game right up to the Redbacks in the first half and led by eight mid way through the second-quarter.

The Redbacks fought back with a 12-point turnaround to lead 59 to 55 at half-time.

The 30-point win was sealed when the Redbacks put on 53 compared to the Slammers 27 in the second half.

Redbacks’ shooting guard Jarrad Prior was the game-high scorer with 32, which included 10 free throws without a miss along with seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Forward Blake Bender hit six field goals without a miss in accumulating 13 together with 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Point guard Joel Wagner had 16 assists, 14 points, three steals and two rebounds while forward Michael Vigor scored 23 along with eight rebounds and three assists.

Centre Carlos White was the Slammers highest scorer with 20 and 13 rebounds, point-guard Senario Hillman scored 17 along with five rebounds and three steals and forward Nathan Van Dijk had 12 and four rebounds.

The win sees the Redbacks’ men consolidate third position in the 14-team competition with 11 wins and four losses.

The Redbacks Women’s team was beaten 55 to 69 by the top-placed Slammers.

The game was won in the second quarter when the Slammers put on a clinical performance in scoring 30 compared to the Redbacks four.

This saw the Slammers establish a half-time lead of 24 after which they were never headed and went on to win by the eventual margin of 14.

Centre Marita Payne was the Redbacks highest scorer with 13 along with 15 rebounds and four assists.

Point-guard Rachel Wattman scored 12 and had five steals while 17-year-old forward Jessica Jakens had eight and six rebounds

Slammers’ guard Kim Sitzmann was the game-high scorer with 22 and 11 rebounds, centre Valerie Ogoke had 15 along with 19 rebounds and three steals and guard Bianca Donovan scored 12.

This loss has seen the Redbacks Women’s team drop one place to sixth in the 12-team competition with eight wins and five losses.

This Friday the Redbacks play Lakeside Lightning at their home-game venue of Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre, with the women’s game starting at 6.30PM and the men’s game at 8.30PM.

This is followed by an away-fixture against Mandurah Magic on Saturday night at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, with tip-off for the women’s game being at 6PM and 8PM for the men’s game.
