Redbacks Split Ledger

Perth Redbacks men’s and women’s teams split the ledger in the National Youth Week State Basketball League games against the East Perth Eagles on Friday night.

The Redbacks’ women’s team had a strong 59 to 50 win over the Eagles, which sees them with five wins and two losses and in fifth place in the 12-team competition.

A key factor in the win was their total dominance in rebounds with 49 compared to the Eagles 23.

Redbacks’ Centre Marita Payne continued her season-long strong form with a game-high 22 along with 18 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Power forward Brooke Hiddlestone and shooting guard Narelle Henry both scored nine with Hiddlestone also having nine rebounds and Henry five assists and two steals.

The Redbacks’ men’s team had a disappointing 97 to 110 loss to the bottom-four Eagles team.

The Eagles led throughout the night and had a telling 62 rebounds compared to the Redbacks 41.

The Redbacks’ point-guard Joel Wagner was their top-scorer with 23 along with 12 assists and three steals, while centre Shaun Bennison fought hard with 15 along with 15 rebounds

Forward Blake Bender scored 19 and had nine rebounds, four assists and four steals while shooting guard Ryan Neill scored 20, had four rebounds and three steals.

The loss sees the Redbacks’ men dropping one-place to third in the 14 team competition with five wins and two losses.

They will be looking forward to the return of big-men Michael Vigor and Adrian Majstrovich from injury when they take on the tough 7th placed Stirling Senators this Saturday at the Warwick Leisure Centre at 8PM.

This game is preceded by the Redbacks’ women’s game against the ninth-placed Senators, which tips off at 6PM.
