Redbacks' Starters Dominate

In a physical encounter the Perth Redbacks Men’s State Basketball League team had a 114 to 103 win against Mandurah Magic.

Four of the Redbacks’ starters combined to score 96 of their 114.

Centre and Perth Wildcats’ development player Michael Vigor again put in a dominant performance with 33 at a field goal percentage of 48 along with 19 rebounds, five assists, four blocked shots and two steals.

Point guard and former Sydney Kings’ player Joel Wagner scored 25 at 59% along with 10 assists and seven rebounds, while shooting guard while former Wildcats’ development player Jarrad Prior scored 21 at 57%.

Ever-consistent United States player Blake Bender scored 17 at 43% along with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals and former league most valuable player Ryan Neill was effective off the bench in scoring 12 at 45%.

The Redbacks’ men now have four wins and one loss and are in second place in the 14-team competition, one place behind the unbeaten Lakeside Lightning which has four wins.

The Redbacks women’s team also had a tough 59 to 55 win against Magic, which sees them with four wins and one loss and in fourth-place in the 12-team competition.

Redbacks’ centre Marita Payne scored 18 at 56% together with 14 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Point guard Monique Kickett had 11 at 36% along with two assists while shooting guard Stephanie Sauter also had 11 at 27%.

17-year-old young-gun Jessica Jakens scored nine points together with nine rebounds and four assists.

The action continues for the Redbacks this Saturday night when they travel to the Eaton Recreation Centre to play the Bunbury Slammers, with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
