Call to Albany Community

Perth Redbacks call on the people of Albany to actively demonstrate their support for the re-entry of a local team in the State Basketball League.

Redbacks’ President Gary Prior said, “The time is right for Albany to again have a team involved in top-line basketball and we fully support the endeavours of the Albany Basketball Association in this regard.

Teams from Kalgoorlie, Geraldton and Bunbury currently play in the State Basketball League and the lack of a team from Albany since 1999 is a large gap.”

Prior said that for this endeavour to succeed it is essential that the people of Albany demonstrate to the State Basketball Commission that sufficient support exists to make such a venture viable.

“This could be done by a large crowd of around 700 to 800 people coming along to watch the Saturday night’s games.

This is typically the crowd size that Geraldton and Kalgoorlie attracts at a regular home game,” he said.

Albany’s re-entry into the State Basketball League would mean that rather than seeing just one game every few years there would be at least 13 home-games each year as well as the potential for finals basketball.

It would also provide the opportunity for the people of Albany to see on a regular basis top-line players such as Australian Boomer and Perth Wildcat Jesse Wagstaff and former Australian Opals squad member Marita Payne, both of whom play for the Redbacks.

The entry price for the entire night is just $10 for adults and $5 for children and concession-card holders.

The Perth Redbacks will also be conducting a junior basketball clinic for seven to 17-year olds, taken by Redbacks’ State Basketball League coach David Harris and their men’s and women’s players on the Sunday from 10.30 AM to 1 PM at a cost of only $15 per head (including venue entry).

There are also community scoring, coaching and refereeing courses offered to interested persons that also start at 10.30Am at a cost of $10 each.
