Redbacks' Lose Four Games

In a disappointing weekend the Perth Redbacks’ men’s and women’s State Basketball League teams both lost their two games.

Perth Redbacks’ captain Narelle Henry tied their Friday-night home-game fixture against the top-placed Willetton Tigers 68-all at the end of regular time, when she hit a three-point shot and then successfully made a free throw.

They eventually lost 78 to 80 in overtime following a controversial non-call by the referees for contact made against power-forward Brooke Hiddlestone in the last play of the game, which would have seen her taking two free throws.

Hiddlestone was the top-scorer for the Redbacks with 23 along with 11 rebounds, while centre Marita Payne scored 21 and 16 rebounds.

The Redbacks women then lost on Saturday night to the sixth placed East Perth Eagles 75 to 81.

Hiddlestone was again the top-scorer with 19 and eight rebounds, while Payne scored 16 and had 14 rebounds.

The Redbacks’ women remain in eighth place in the 12-team competition with six wins and nine losses.

The Redbacks’ men’s team lost their first game of the weekend to the fifth-placed Tigers 96 to 102.

Perth Wildcat and Australian Boomer’s player Jesse Wagstaff top-scored for the Redbacks with 28, along with seven rebounds.

Shooting guard Ryan Neill was their next highest scorer with 21, while point-guard Joel Wagner amassed 13 assists along with 17 points and five rebounds.

The Redbacks’ men then lost to the ninth-placed Eagles 108 to 112.

Wagstaff again top-scored with 28 along with 17 rebounds, six steals and four assists.

Forward Adrian Majstrovich was their next highest scorer with 26 along with 18 rebounds, while Wagner scored 20 and had 12 assists and five steals.

Following the two losses the Redbacks men drop from eighth to tenth-place in the 14-team competition with a season record of eight wins and 10 losses.

The Redbacks’ men travel next week to Kalgoorlie to play the Goldfields Giants in what is now an almost must-win game for them to make the play-offs, while the women’s team has a bye.
