Redbacks Scuttle Buccs

The Perth Redbacks’ men’s State Basketball League team had a strong 100 to 85 home-game win over the Geraldton Buccaneers in Monday’s home game.

The first half was a tight affair that saw the lead change nine times and the scores tied on four occasions, with the Redbacks going in at half time with just a one-point 56 to 55 lead.

The Redbacks won the game in the second half holding the Buccaneers to just 30 points while scoring 44 themselves.

Redbacks’ coach David Harris attributed the win to an improved defensive effort by his team throughout the game, as well as there being six players who scored more than 10 points.

“We need to recognise the strong contribution of our bench-players in the context of today’s win, with them contributing 16 points compared to our opponent’s bench-players contribution of just three points,” he said.

Harris named point guard Joel Wagner as the Redbacks’ most valuable player with 14 assists, 12 points at a field goal percentage of 73, four rebounds and three steals.

Shooting guard Ryan Neill was their highest scorer with 27 at 50% and four assists.

Forward Adrian Majstrovich scored 21 along with 10 rebounds and four assists, while power-forward Jesse Wagstaff scored 14 and had six rebounds.

Centre Michael Vigor scored 10 along with 10 rebounds and four assists while fellow centre Daniel Maddox scored 10 and had seven rebounds.

The win sees the Redbacks’ men with eight wins and eight losses and in eighth position in the 14-team competition.

This Friday sees the Redbacks’ women’s team back in action against the tough Willetton Tigers combination, with tip-off being at 6.30PM at their home-game venue of the Belmont Leisure and Aquatic Centre.

This is followed by the men’s Redbacks’ team playing the Tigers at 8.30PM.

Both teams then travel to the Morley Recreation Centre on Saturday where they meet the East Perth Eagles, with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.

All Redbacks’ fans are encouraged to come down and support their team in these upcoming vital fixtures.
