Redbacks break 14-year drought

The Perth Redbacks’ men’s State Basketball League team broke a 14-year away game losing streak in Geraldton when they beat the Sun City Buccaneers 111 to 86 on Saturday night.

It also sees the Redbacks’ men break a recent four-game losing streak.

Coach David Harris was ecstatic at breaking the 14-year drought and reversing his team’s recent run of losses. 

"The boys were determined to take it up to our opponents in one of the toughest away-game venues by ramping up the defensive component of our game, which paid very real dividends,” he said.

The win was set up in the first quarter, when the Redbacks established a 16-point lead by scoring 37 compared to the Buccaneers 21.

Redbacks' point guard Joel Wagner nearly had a ‘triple-double’ in making 11 assists, scoring 19 and bringing down eight rebounds.

34-year old Redbacks’ shooting guard Ryan Neill was the game-high scorer with 39 at the strong field goal percentage of 56.

Forward Adrian Majstrovich was their next highest scorer with 29 while bringing down 12 rebounds and making four assists.

Centre Michael Vigor had 15 and eight rebounds while power-forward Daniel Maddox had nine rebounds and scored five.

Forward Todd Brown top-scored for the Buccaneers with 21 along with four rebounds.

Buccaneers centre Ben Pepper had 20 and 11 rebounds while guard Michael Lay had 19 along with six assists and five rebounds.

The Redbacks’ strong win sees them with a season record of six wins and six losses and in seventh place in the 14-team competition.

The action continues this Saturday with the both the Redbacks’ men’s and women’s teams playing the Mandurah Magic at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, 303 Pinjarra Road Mandurah.

The women’s game starts at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
