Redbacks Fall at Last Hurdle

Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ men’s and women’s State Basketball League teams both missed out on Grand Final games after losing their remaining semi-final games.

The Redbacks’ men’s team was beaten by Lakeside Lightning 109 to 101 in the second semi-final game, which meant they lost the best of three game series with two successive defeats.

Shooting guard Ryan Neill top scored for the Redbacks with 25 along with six rebounds, four assists and three steals while forward Jon Meriweather scored 22 and 11 rebounds.

Forward Ben Beran was the highest scorer for Lakeside with 40, while shooting Luke Payne scored 28 and centre Jarrad Prue brought down 20 rebounds.

Lakeside will now play the Willetton Tigers in the Grand Final at 7.30PM this Saturday at the State Basketball Centre, Stephenson Ave Mount Claremont.

The Redbacks women’s team went into the semi-final series one game ahead in their three-game series against the Willetton Tigers.

However, they missed out on a grand final berth after losing the second semi-final game to the Tigers 62 to 70 and the third game 60 to 75.

Veteran Redbacks’ forward Brooke Hiddlestone was the game-high scorer in the second-semi-final with 32 and 14 rebounds, while centre Marita Payne was their next highest scorer with 12 along with nine rebounds, six assists and three steals.

Tigers’ top-scorer was shooting guard Melissa Marsh with 28, while point-guard Kate Malpass scored 14 along with five assists and four steals.

Hiddlestone was also the highest scorer in the third semi-final game with 19 along with 12 rebounds, while Marita Payne scored 10.

There was a broad spread of scorers for the Tigers which included Marsh and centre Zoe Harper each with 15 and Malpass with 14.

The women’s grand final will be between the Tigers and Perry Lakes Hawks this Friday at 7.30PM at the State Basketball Centre.
