The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks celebrates the Division One Women’s WABL team 57 to 48 point win in their grand final showdown against the Wanneroo Wolves.

In what was a tight game throughout, during which the lead changed more than 10 times, the result was decided in the last quarter when the Redbacks retained their composure by making their free-throws as well as methodically using up the shot-clock and working the ball around to set up easy lay-ups. This was unlike earlier in the game, when they were mainly relying on their outside shooting and strong defence to keep in the contest.

The Redbacks were also assisted by undisciplined play from the Wolves in which one of their players gave a technical foul away by gesturing a “finger-sign” to the referees after giving away her 5th foul. This effectively resulted in four shots (two shots as they were in team-foul trouble and two shots for the technical foul), three of which were put away, and saw the Redbacks move away to a 4 point lead with just over a minute to go. After that, Wanneroo were forced to foul to “stop the clock”, but the women responded to this tactic by continuing to put their resultant free throws away throughout the last minute extending their lead to the eventual nine-point winning margin.

The win represents the first WABL grand final win for a Redbacks’ team since the Division One Men’s team win in 2005.

As well as winning the grand final, the women were also the Northern Conference Champions for being the top-ranked team in that conference at the end of the qualifying round. This was supplemented by the fact that club stalwart Natalie Harris was honoured with an All-Star Award.

Our WABL teams now look forward to the upcoming Willetton Carnival in October followed by the Basketball WA Championships in late November/early December.
