Redbacks Loose To Giants

:: Perth Basketball Association Inc. News Item

6-8-2007 - By Gary Prior

In the last round of the regular season fixtures the Perth Redbacks' men's State Basketball League team lost to the second-placed Kalgoorlie Giants in Kalgoorlie 77 to 123.

As the Redbacks' team was severely weakened due to the absence of seven of its regular players due to injury or illness, coach Graham Frey took the opportunity to blood new players as demonstrated by six of their players being 20 years or less, with two of them being 16-years-old. Frey stated that he believed the young combination will form the nucleus of the team for many years to come.

Point-guard Joel Wagner top scored for the Redbacks with 16 points along with an impressive 9 assists. This sees Wagner topping the entire league in assists and also achieving a club record with a season tally of 228. Next highest scorer for Perth was big-man Rohan Osment who scored 14 points and brought down 10 rebounds.

However, the Redbacks could not hold down the Giants combination of big-man Ty Shaw and guards Jimmy Bowler and Mark Heron who scored 21, 19 and 17 points respectively.

The loss means that the Redbacks' men end their season with 5 wins and 19 losses and end up in 12th place in the 13 team competition.

The Perth Redbacks' women's team had a bye in the final round of the regular season fixtures. However, the results of other matches played on the weekend did not go their way and they narrowly missed out of the finals action by one place, having come 7th in the 12-team competition with 12 wins and 10 losses.

There are eight games played this week in the first round of men's and women's finals. Further details can be found on the Basketball WA website www.basketballwa.asn.au.
