Redbacks Aim To Strike Gold

This weekend the Redbacks Men's SBL team rolls into Kalgoorlie for their last clash of the 2007 SBL season against the Goldfields Giants. While the Redbacks will look to bow out with a win against the second placed Giants, the Giants must win to secure second place from Willetton (also 16-7) and home court advantage right through to the Grand Final.

The Redbacks will be missing starters Luke Mackay and Stephen Cousins as well as Wade Horwood, Damian King and former Wildcat Paul Pochintesta. On top of the above injuries, shooting guard Jarrad Prior has been carrying an injury in the last few games. However this has not stopped the Redbacks from being aggresive and competetive against all their opposition. They lost to the second placed Willetton Tigers last week by just 9 points, while also registering big wins against Wanneroo, Mandurah and play offs bound Perry Lakes Hawks.

The Redbacks have injected two Under 18 players, both of whome at 16 years of age show impressive signs for the future. Jarrad Jackson has played the last four games, while Under 18 State player, Robert Cassir suited up for his first game last weekend against the Tigers. Also into the mix is 23 year old Division 1 player Jarrad Faint, who has also played the last four games in his first SBL season.

It has been the form of starting guards Joel Wagner and Ryan Neill who have spear headed the Redbacks attack in recent weeks, Wagner leads the league in assists (9.5 per game) while Neal has averaged 31 ppg in the last 5 weeks. They will again have to be at their best to stop the rampaging Giants. The Giants have two imports in Ty Shaw (second in league for rebounds) and Michael Haney (4th in league for field goal percentage). Along with veterans Shamus Ballantyne (second in league for assists) and Mark Heron and the always tough local contingent, the Giants have a very tough team.
