29-7-2007 - By Gary Prior

The Perth Redbacks’ women’s State Basketball League team had a disappointing loss to the Willetton Tigers 63 to 92, leaving them with 12 wins and 10 losses and seeing them slip from the 6th and last play-off position into 7th place. As the Redbacks women have a bye in the last round of qualifying fixtures next week, they will be reliant on other results to have any chance of sneaking back into the final six and participating in the play-offs.

Centre Christine Boyd top scored for Perth with 26 points along with 13 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 blocked shot. Shooting guard Latoya Wallace was the next highest scorer for Perth with 8 points along with 4 assists. However they could not overcome the consistency of the Tigers as demonstrated by Samantha Norwood, Melissa Marsh and Alison Counsel who scored 21, 19 and 15 points respectively.

The Redbacks men’s team lost in a tough encounter against the 2nd placed Tigers 111 to 102. Former league most valuable player Ryan Neill was the game high scorer with 37 points, along with 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal. Point-guard Joel Wagner scored 20 points together with an impressive 17 assists while shooting guard Jarrad Prior scored 16 points along with 5 rebounds and 1 assist.

United States import and big-man Robert Epps was the top-scorer for the Tigers with 28 points along with 11 rebounds. Current Perth Wildcats player Ben Hunt was their next highest scorer with 25 points together with 7 assists and 7 rebounds.

The loss means that the Redbacks’ men now have a season record 5 wins and 18 losses and are in 12th position in the 13-team competition. Their final game of the year is an away game against the Kalgoorlie Giants this Saturday.
