The Perth Redbacks’ men’s State Basketball League had an upset win over the Wanneroo Wolves before a large crowd at the Belmont Oasis stadium last weekend, 121 to 92. The win means that the Redbacks now have 5 wins and 16 losses and are in 12th place in the 13 team competition.

Former league most valuable player Ryan Neill continued his strong recent with a game-high score for the Redbacks with 39 points along with 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Point-guard Joel Wagner further consolidated his position as league leader with assists with 17 for the game for a season and league-high tally of 202, along with 33 points. Current Perth Wildcat Jeff Dowdell was the highest scorer for the Wolves with 29 points along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

The Redbacks’ women lost to the Wolves 87 to 90 in a dramatic game that went to double-overtime after scores were level at the regular time and the first period of extra-time. The ever-reliable centre Christine Boyd top scored for Perth with 44 points along with 10 rebounds. Forward Sophie Kelly was the next-highest scorer for Perth with 10 points and 13 rebounds and Kerise Delcoure contributed strongly with 7 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists. However, they could not overcome the strong combined efforts of the Wolves’ combination that included 25 points from forward Jessica Spinner, 23 points from 17-year-old guard Meghan D’Arcy and 13 points from guard Jessica Driscoll.

The win now leaves the Redbacks’ women teetering precariously in the 6th and last play-off position in the 12-team competition with 12 wins and 9 losses, meaning their last qualifying game against the Willetton Wolves almost assumes “do or die” status. That game is at 6:00PM this Saturday at the Willetton Basketball Stadium, with the men’s game starting at 8:00PM.
