Redbacks Split Slammers

The Perth Redbacks Women won their sixth straight game tonight against the Bunbury Slammers in front of a large home crowd, the final score 69-62. Christine Boyd was againt the stand out, scoring 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Equally impressive was the performance of Under 18 State player Kristelle Councillor who had 13 points 7 rebounds and 3 assists in her starting role.

The Redbacks won every quater, bar the last, shot an impressive 41% from the floor and equally impressive 72% from the free throw line. Their defensive pressure was solid with the Slammers shooting just 28% for the game (43% from the line). The only down side for the match was the third quater injury to Sophie Kelly who came down badly on her ankle in a rebounding contest and was unable to return to the match. In just 17 minutes Kelly had 12 points and 4 boards for the match.

Ever improving Natalie Harris and Latoya Wallace played their roles well. Harris had 6 points and an amazing 13 rebounds, while Wallace had 4 points, 2 rebounds and 5 assists.

It was not a night to remember for the men, their poor start and finish costing them a potential win, eventually going down 78-91. The Redbacks got down 15-20 by quater time and 34-49 by the half time break. However a spirited come back in the third gave them a one point lead (65-64) going into the last quater. But with two starters fouling out and a lack of fire power the Redbacks could manage just 13 points in the quater while giving up 27 to the Slammers.

Ryan Neill led all scorers with 25 points to go with 6 rebounds. Former Wildcat Paul Pochintesta also played well with 19 points. However they were the only two who could manage double figures for the game, the next highest Jarrad Prior with 9. Joel Wagner also played a good support role with 8 points and 5 assists.

The Redbacks put up two more shots for the game but with a percentage of just 32% compared to the Slammers 48% (42% outside) they could not get the jobe done. The rebound count hurt the Redbacks, pulling down just 34 rebounds, to the Slammers 55.

Paddy Phillips was the highest scorer for the Slammers with 22 points. Four other players scored in double digits for the Bunbury team, led by import Carey Rigsby with 19 points and an amazing 24 rebounds. David Dwyer was next on the list with 14 points and 9 rebounds, while Aaron Edwards had a double-double in his 301st game, scoring 12 points and 12 rebounds. Joshua Weir was last on the list with 10 points and 5 assists.

The Slammers play the Goldfields Giants in Bunbury tomorrow and the Redbacks take on the Giants at Belmont on Monday.
