Eagles Snared In Redbacks Web

The Perth Redbacks’ men’s and women’s teams had strong wins over the East Perth Eagles in the sixth round of the State Basketball League competition last weekend, with score-lines of 106 to 95 and 72 to 53 respectively.

In what is very much a rebuilding year for the Redbacks’ men, coach Graham Frey went for a combination of youth and experience in a team that included five players under 20-years of age along with two veteran ex-Perth Wildcats players in Matt Earp and Paul Pocinchesta. Frey said: “The most pleasing aspect was that it was very much an overall team effort and we kept our nerve when they came back at us to hold on for a well-earned win”.

Pocinchesta was the Redbacks’ highest scorer with 20 points closely followed by former league most valuable player Ryan Neil with 19 points. 18-year-old small-forward Trent Dell’orso also put in a strong effort in scoring 18 points and taking 8 rebounds. The Redbacks’ men’s team now has 2 wins and 5 losses and has moved 11th to 10th place in the 13 team competition.

Perth Lynx player Christine Boyd continued her strong season-long form again being the top-scorer for the Redbacks’ women’s team with 24 points along with 9 rebounds. Boyd was ably supported by Kristelle Councillor who scored 18 points along with 5 steals and the ever-improving Sophie Kelly, who scored 12 points at an impressive field goal percentage of 71% and took 7 rebounds. The win means that they now have 3 wins and 4 losses and are in 7th position in the 12 team competition.

The next home game for the Redbacks at Belmont Oasis is this Sunday against the Geraldton Buccaneers, with the women’s game starting at 11AM and the men’s game at 1PM.
