4-5-2007 - By Gary Prior
The Perth Redbacks’ women’s State Basketball League team won their two games over the weekend 67 to 54 against Perry Lakes at Belmont and 61 to 53 against Bunbury Slammers at Bunbury.
Perth Lynx player and centre Christine Boyd was the top scorer for the Redbacks in their win against Perry Lakes with 20 points, while forward Sophie Kelly was the next highest scorer with 14 points. In the game against Bunbury Slammers, Boyd was again the top scorer with 28 points and Kelly next highest with 10 points.
The two wins means the Redbacks’ women now have 3 wins and 3 losses for the year and move dramatically up the ladder from 10th position to 5th position in the 12 team competition.
The Redbacks’ men’s team was less fortunate, losing both their games 78 to 103 against Perry Lakes and 78 to 82 in a thriller against Bunbury Slammers. Highest scorers for the Redbacks in the Perry Lakes game was shooting guard Ryan Neill with 22 points and point guard Joel Wagner next highest with 15 points. Shooting guard Jarrad Prior was the top scorer in the game against Bunbury with 16 points, while former Perth Wildcat Paul Pocinchesta scored 15 points.
The two losses means that the men have won only one game from six and sees them slip from 10th to 12th position on the ladder in the 13 team competition.
The action continues this Saturday night with the Redbacks playing the East Perth Eagles this Saturday night at the Morley Recreation Centre with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
