Wolves Beat Redbacks

In the third round of State Basketball League fixtures, both the Perth Redbacks men’s and women’s teams were narrowly beaten by the Wanneroo Wolves at Joondalup, with the men losing 108 to 118 and the women 65 to 74.

The Redbacks men’s French import Sami Driss played strongly amassing 33 points at a field goal percentage of 48% together with 7 rebounds and 2 steals. 19-year-old shooting guard Jarrad Prior was the next highest scorer with 23 points and 9 rebounds and up and coming point guard Joel Wagner was the next highest scorer with 17 points and 8 assists. However, despite these strong efforts the Redbacks combination simply could not overcome the Wolves big-men Damien Matacz, who scored 30 points together with 19 rebounds and 13 assists and Perth Wildcat Jeff Dowdell, who scored 42 points.

The loss for the Redbacks men’s team means it has one win and two losses and remains in 10th place in the 13-team competition.

The Redbacks women’s centre and Perth Lynx player Christine Boyd continued her season strong form top-scoring for the team with 15 points. However, this was not enough to hold down the Wolves combination of scorers led by Meaghan D’arcy, who had a game-high score 17 points and Jodie Wallace, who scored 13 points. The loss means that the Redbacks women’s team also has one win and two losses for the season and is in 8th position in the twelve team competition.

The action continues this Friday at Perth’s home venue at Belmont Oasis where they play the Willetton Tigers with the women’s game starting at 6:30PM and the men’s game at 8:30PM.
