Cougars Feel Redbacks Sting

In a strong return to form last weekend following its previous loss to Rockingham, the Perth Redbacks State Basketball League men’s team defeated the highly rated Cockburn Cougars 97 to 82. In his first winning game as coach, David Harris commented, “The return to form can be contributed to our hard defensive pressure and discipline in complying with the overall game plan”.

19-year-old point guard Joel Wagner dominated with an outstanding 12 assists, 13 points and 5 rebounds and was supported by former Perth Wildcat Paul Pocinchesta, who scored a game high total of 27 points. They were ably backed up by French import Sami Driss who in his first game for the club scored 13 points and took 10 rebounds and by shooting guard Jarrad Prior who, in his return game following a shoulder operation, scored 16 points at the impressive field goal percentage of 75% and made 3 assists. This win means that the men have won one game from two and are in 10th position in the 14 team competition.

The Redbacks women’s SBL team went down in a thriller to Cockburn 51 to 54, with their last three point shot of the game narrowly missing after circling the ring with just three seconds remaining. Perth Lynx player Christine Boyd was their best player scoring 23 points and taking down 15 rebounds.

The loss means the Redbacks women’s team also has one win from two games and is in 6th position in the twelve team competition.

Perth’s next play Wanneroo Wolves is an away fixture this Friday at the Joondalup Basketball Stadium, with the women’s game commencing at 6:30PM and the men’s game at 8:30PM.
