Redbacks Go 1-1

The Perth Redbacks had mixed results at Rockingham on Saturday night. The girls got off to a good start to the season, defeating the Lady Flames by six points. Christine Boyd led the way with 21 points, she was ably assisted by Christelle Sampi with 12 points. Shelly Boston lead the charge for Rockingham with a game high 28 points.

With five players from last years team not playing and a new head coach the young Redbacks team looked solid in their first hit out. With three new players and a team with an average age of just 22.6 there are certainly exciting times ahead as the team continues to improve.

The men failed to fire at all in their first game of the season going down by 43 points. The Flames raced out to a 17 point lead by 1/4 time and never let up the entire game. The highest margin reached 50 points until a late scoring splurge of 7 points in the final minute of the game decreased it back to the final margin of 43 points.

Former league MVP Ryan Neill scored a game high 29 points (18 of them from outside the 3 point arc). He was assisted by Ryan De Glanville who had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Ex-Redback Anthony Exeter had 24 points, Travis Moore had 23 points, and import Anton Lyons 17 points and 15 rebounds lead the way for the Flames. Rockingham suited up just one import for the game and looked the goods for the whole 48 minutes and should be set for a good year.

The Redbacks should continue to get stronger with Head Coach Graham Frey returning in three games time from Holidays. Restricted player Sammy Driss is also still to be added to the team after failing to receive a clearance making him unavailable to suite up. With a couple more starting calibre players to add to the team, we look forward to a much stronger Redbacks line up in the coming weeks.

All SBL teams now have the Easter long weekend off. The Redbacks then return for their first home game of the year against the Cockburn Cougars. The game is to be played at Belmont Oasis on Saturday the 14th of April, with the women tipping off at 6:00pm and the men at 8:00pm. We look forward to seeing ALL Redbacks fans, members, and junior players filling the stands in a sea of red to get both teams over the line in very winnable games.

Check back in the coming days for full stats and game reviews from the weekends round of play, as well as previews of our next game.
