Perth Redbacks Women Continue Winning Form

The Perth Redbacks State Basketball League women’s team defeated Stirling Senators 68 to 49 on Saturday night to record their fourth win in a row. Coach Maryanne Briggs commented, “The pleasing aspect of this game was that we played hard defence in the second half and the game plan came together. Brooke Hiddlestone’s game was greatly improved as a result of her following her shot and getting the tough offensive rebound.”
The veteran combination of forward Hiddlestone and centre Christine Boyd were again the standouts for the Perth team with both getting “double-doubles”. Hiddlestone scored 16 points at a field goal shooting percentage of 37, took 10 rebounds and made 1 steal and 1 assist and Boyd scored 20 points at 50%, took 9 rebounds and made 3 assists, 2 blocked shots and 2 steals.
Forward Helen Vlahov was the next highest scorer with 9 points at 34%, which included 5 from 6 free throws and point guard Hayley Clendinning scored 7 points at 75% together with 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Guard Kerise Delcore scored 7 points at 50%, took 3 rebounds and made 1 assist.
Small-forward Martine Pearman scored 6 points at 28%, took 4 rebounds and made 5 assists, 1 block shot and 1 steal while Natalie Harris scored 1 point, took 8 rebounds and made 5 assists and 2 steals. Back-up point guard Kaye Macmillan took 1 rebound and made 2 assists while 17-year old rookie Kristy Jdrzewewski made 1 block shot in her 1 minute on court.
The win sees the women move from 4th to 2nd place with 4 win and 1 loss, with Willetton Tigers occupying top spot with 4 wins and no losses.
The Perth men’s team were less successful in their game against the experienced Stirling Senators’ team, which includes one current Wildcat and Boomer player in Tony Ronaldson and two former Wildcats in Carmie Olowoyo and Paul Pochintesta, going down 75 to 83 in a tough encounter. Coach Graham Frey said that the young Perth team had their opportunities during the game to win but their inexperience, compounded by a strong second-half effort from Ronaldson who scored a game-high 27 points, contributed to the loss.
Top scorer for Perth was point guard Adam Johnston with 19 points at 62% together with 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, with next highest scorer being shooting guard Jarrad Prior with 16 points at 36% together with 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 blocked shot and 1 steal. Small forward Phil De Glanville had a strong game coming in with a double-double scoring 15 points at 41% and taking 10 rebounds together with 5 assists, 2 blocked shots and 1 steal .
