In a strong return to form the Perth Redbacks State Basketball League women’s team defeated the highly rated Cockburn Cougars combination 69 to 49 on Saturday night. An extremely pleased Perth coach Maryanne Briggs commented, “It was a fabulous game by the girls, with a much better team effort and game plays overall and I am very proud of them all.”
The veteran combination of Brooke Hiddlestone and Christine Boyd were the standouts for the Perth team with Hiddlestone scoring 20 points, taking 7 rebounds and making 2 steals, 2 assists and 2 shot-blocks and Boyd scoring 20 points (which included 6 from 6 free throw points), taking 16 rebounds, making 2 assists and 1 steal.
Martine Pearman was the next highest scorer with 10 points at a field goal percentage of 56 together with 5 rebounds and 1 assist and Hayley Clendenning scored 9 points, took 2 rebounds and made 2 steals.
Guard Natalie Harris worked hard throughout the game and scored 8 points and made 2 assists, 2 block-shots and 2 steals while Latoya Wallace scored 2 points and made 1 block-shot, 1 steal and 1 rebound. Helen Vlahov contributed with 5 rebounds and 1 assist and guard Kerise Del Coure made 2 assists.
The win sees the women in 6th place with 1 win and 1 loss, with Willetton Tigers occupying top spot with 3 wins and no losses.
In a team depleted by the loss of point guard Adam Johnston and forward Ryan De Glanville, the Perth Redbacks men’s team lost to Cockburn’s strong combination 72 to 103. Perth’s mainly young brigade of players struggled against Cockburn’s strong combination and could not stop their National Basketball League player Geordie Cullen, who scored 28 points at a strong shooting percentage of 75.
Perth’s coach Mal Keene was pleased with the efforts of big-man Clint Tracy and generally with the young-brigade of players, who he said fought hard against the experienced and tough Cockburn combination. Tracy scored 25 points, took 10 rebounds, made 3 steals and 2 assists while 18-year off-guard Jarrad Prior was the next highest scorer on 12 points together with 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists.
Small forward Phil De Glanville was the next highest scorer for Perth with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists while Matthew Earp scored 7 points, took 6 rebounds and made 1 assist. Martin Vahala contributed well from the bench scoring 6 points while taking 3 rebounds together with 2 assists and 1 steal while point guard Wade Horwood scored 3 points, took 1 rebound, made 1 assist and 1 steal.
Brett Zani scored 2 points, took 6 rebounds, made 2 assists and 1 steal while Steve Cousins scored his first points in the SBL coming in with a return of 2 points and 1 rebound.
In a return to SBL action this year Rohan Osment scored 2 points, took 8 rebounds and made 1 assist while point-guard Joel Wagner took 3 rebounds and made 2 assists and 1 steal.
The loss sees the Perth men’s team in 12th position on the ladder with Cockburn occupying top spot.
There is a general league bye next week due to Easter, with round 3 starting on Friday 21 April for Perth against the East Perth Eagles at Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre, Alexander Road Bentley, with the women’s game starting at 6:30 PM and the men’s game starting at 8:30 PM.
