Wolves get advantage

AFTER finishing the State Basketball League season in third spot with their best regular season record (18-8), the Wanneroo Wolves men’s team have home-court advantage for their best of three finals series against the Perry Lakes Hawks.

The Wolves finished off the season with wins over the Mandurah Magic and Rockingham Flames at the weekend.

Despite losing both matches (to the same two teams as the men), the Wolves women’s team finished in eighth spot with a 10-12 record and will also take on the first-placed Hawks in a best of three series.

The men’s team beat the Magic 101-91 in Mandurah on Friday night before dousing the Flames at Joondalup Basketball Stadium (99-89) the next night.

The women lost 72-66 to the Magic and 75-61 to the Flames.

Marcus Moore top scored against the Magic with 29 points.

The win was set up in the first quarter with the Wolves leading 35-17 at the first break.

Damian Matacz top scored against the Flames on Saturday night with 26 points.

Despite shooting 36 per cent, the home side controlled the contest.

The women’s team started strongly against the Magic in Mandurah but let the home side back in the contest in the second quarter. Mandurah won 72-66.

Meghan D’Arcy (15 points) and Whitney Perret (13 points) were the Wolves’ best offensive players.

A horror third quarter cost the Wolves the following night against Rockingham. Wanneroo managed six points in the third period as the Flames went from a four-point deficit at half-time to a 10-point lead at the final break. The Flames won 75-61.
