Road trip double seals second spot
AMERICAN imports Michael Haney and Alonzo Hird led the Goldfields
Giants to a clean sweep of their State Basketball League road
double-header yesterday.
The duo combined for 49 points in yesterday’s 108-94 victory over Perry Lakes Hawks, the Giants’ fifth in succession which clinched second spot.
Hird also pulled down 14 rebounds, while Giants captain Shamus Ballantyne scored 16 points and dished off 10 assists.
The Giants have now beaten five top-eight sides in as many games, accounting for Perry Lakes, Lakeside (88-78), Geraldton (116-110), Wanneroo (87-86) and Kalamunda (95-84).
Goldfields’ regular season record stands at 20-5 following yesterday’s win with one game to play before the play-offs. The lowest the Giants can finish is second, although they are still a mathematical chance of claiming top spot if they beat Willetton and Lakeside Lightning lose their final game against lowly-ranked East Perth next Saturday.
In other results, Geraldton have fallen in a big heap after losing their fifth consecutive game 95-94 against seventh-placed Stirling at home on Saturday.
The Buccaneers held second spot on the ladder for nine straight weeks through the season and appeared genuine championship contenders until a month ago.
Bunbury slumped to their 11th straight defeat after back-to-back losses at the weekend. The Slammers were beaten 101-91 by East Perth on Friday before losing 98-81 to Wanneroo on Saturday.
