Flames v Magic Review

The Rockingham Flames Men and Women faced local rival Mandurah Magic this past Friday when the ‘Coast FM’ Cup went on the line in round seventeen of the State Basketball League.

The Lady Flames began with Gail Eikhoudt and Kaye Tucker both scoring five points apiece to have scores locked at 10-10 and the mid point of the term. In the remaining six minutes the Magic went on a 14-7 scoring run which built a 24-17 lead for the visitors at the first break.

To start the second term the Magic increased their lead to 12 before a fight back was staged as Tucker, Wheki and Eikhoudt all landed perimeter shots to give the Lady Flames 10 consecutive points. To round out the quarter it was very tight but the Magic edged in front to take a 38-33 lead into the change rooms at half time.

The Lady Flames scored the opening basket of the third but from that point on the Magic went on a scoring rampage extending their lead to 17 points as they scored 28-16 points for the term. At the last change the Lady Flames trailed 66-49 and were struggling to contain the firepower of Boston, Hayward and Fletcher.

Hayleigh Petersen opened proceedings with a three point basket but any chance of a last quarter fight back were squashed as the Magic pushed their lead to 30 but to the Lady Flames credit they continued to battle to the final siren where they eventually went down 89-66.

Kaye Tucker led from the front once again with 25pts & 10rebs while Gail Eikhoudt (14) and Teamo Wheki (12) were the only other Lady Flames to reach double figures.

Now to the Men, who needed to win by 25 points or greater to claim the Coast FM cup for Rockingham and were aided by the return of captain Travis Moore who returned after finger surgery.

The Flames came out running and gunning as Trey Clarkson landed 10 first quarter points to have the Flames (68% field goal for the term) marginally in front 34-29 heading into the first change.

In the second the Flames started to assert their dominance on the game as the lead ballooned to 20 points and looked like they were going to run away with it before some late baskets from the visitors had the score at 66-52 heading into the half time interval.

The first three minutes of the third brought plenty of fireworks as the Magic were charged with four technical fouls (Trahair, Caporn, Bowman, Bench) which saw the Flames lead extend to 28 courtesy of Joey Harrell’s accuracy from the foul line. The Flames continued with great defensive pressure pushing their lead to 35 before the Magic fought back to have only 23 points separating the teams at the last break (112-89).

With the knowledge they had to win by at least 25 points to claim the trophy the Flames tightened up and the lead was reduced to just 18 which had the home crowd restless. With six minutes remaining and the lead at 19 points the Flames kicked into gear as the lead was pushed to 30 in the next three minutes of play and from that point there was no going back as they claimed the first annual Coast FM Challenge in front of a bumper crowd at the Hot House (143-111).

The Flames were led by import Joey Harrell 31pts, 5rebs & 4asts with great support from Ryan Godfrey 24pts, 6asts & 4rebs and Trey Clarkson 19pts & 6rebs as seven Flames registered double figure points.

This weekend will see both teams visit Willetton on Friday night before returning home on Saturday for their final home game of the regular season where they will face off against the Eastern Suns. The women will take to the court at 6:00pm and men at 8:00pm.
