Redbacks Split Ledger With Suns

In front of a large crowd of 300, last weekend’s Local Drug Action Groups State Basketball League Challenge held at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre saw the Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks split the ledger with the Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

The Redbacks women’s team won 83 to 53 points.  Their top-scorer was former National Basketball League player Brooke Hiddlestone with 29 points.  USA Women’s National Basketball Association draftee Renae Camino was the next highest scorer with 27 points and former Perth Lynx player Narelle Henry scored 15 points.

The top-scorer for the Suns was point-guard Emma Berryman with 29 points.  2009/10 Perth Lynx player and tough centre Samantha Norwood was their next highest scorer with 11 points.

The win sees the Redbacks’ move up one place to third in the 12-team competition with 13 wins and 6 losses.

The Redbacks’ men’s team lost in overtime against the Suns 116 to 132, after the game was level at 110 each at the end of regular time in what was the two teams second overtime game this year.  The top-scorer for the Redbacks was USA import Chris Lynch with 37 points along with 15 rebounds.  Shooting guard Jarrad Prior scored 24 points along with 6 rebounds.  Fellow shooting guard Ryan Neill also scored 24 points along 5 rebounds with point guard Joel Wagner making 10 assists and scoring 16 points.

However, despite these efforts the Redbacks could not hold down Suns’ player and former National Basketball League player Adrian Majstrovich who scored a game-high 39 points along with a massive 25 rebounds and 8 assists.  Forward Neil Purcell scored 29 points along with 6 rebounds and guard Ben Smith scored 27 points along with 7 rebounds.

The overtime loss was costly for the Redbacks as they drop from 7th to 9th position in the 14-team competition with 9 wins and 14 losses, with only the top 8 teams participating in the finals play-offs.

With just three games remaining this year, his makes this Saturday’s games against the East Perth Eagles at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre vital for the Redbacks with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
