Buccs make heavy weather of it (Geraldton Guardian)

Victor Tantini of the Geraldton Guardian reports on the Buccs win over the Eagles below.

The Dominos Pizza Buccaneers didn’t make easy work of their 90-84 victory on Saturday night.

The Buccs boasted a 10-2 record compared to the Eagles' 4-7 but the Eagles were boosted by Wildcat Steven Weigh and hit the pine running to take an early lead.

The Buccs got to the basket as often but the Eagles monopolised the rebounds and kept getting a second and third bite.

Ray Evans' men found better rhythm when Greg Brown and Aaron Ralph came on but the visitors kept feeding off the boards and stayed ahead.

The Eagles deserved to go to quarter time in front, but were denied at the death by young gun Luke Wrensted.

With the clock running on fumes, Wrensted realised there wasn't time for one more pass so he steadied and peeled off a brilliant three for the Buccs to lead 24-23.

The second quarter was another tussle and the lead changed six times.

The Eagles collected many easy rebounds and scrapped hard and again, the Buccs went to the break ahead in the final seconds  courtesy of a Michael Le Blanc free throw.

The turnout was impressive and were getting value from Luke Meyer (on his way to 18pts at 41 per cent), Le Blanc (27pts at 65), Daniel Thomas, Matt Wundenburg and the ever-calm Tom Witts (12pts at 40).

But the overall package was underperforming.

The Eagles were well served by Ben Thompson, Jared Balcombe, Weigh and the impressive John Taylor, all with 15 or more points.

The lead changed hands four times in the third quarter and the Buccs went to the last break up 65-62.

The Eagles persisted and a couple of Taylor bombs gave them a 75-67 lead four minutes in.

With both coaches using timeouts to adjust troops and tactics, the Buccs piled on the pressure and it certainly affected Weigh who missed a couple of crucial shots.

With 3.13 left, Le Blanc slotted a three to reduce the deficit to one point.

Now the Buccs were predatory, closing in on the kill and thirty seconds later, the lead changed hands for the last time.

The Buccs safely closed out the last minutes to win 90-84.

Buccs coach Ray Evans said the Eagles had not been underestimated.

"We knew this would be tough and Weigh would make them better but I don't think we were relaxed," Evans said.

"We were a little flat, sometimes it's like that but when the game was on the line, we got the win.

"We need to be consistent; we're still not capable of playing tough week in and week out but tonight was good, I think the boys deserve credit for a fightback.

Evans also added that the crowd did their bit to help boost the Buccs on the court.

"I don't think I've ever heard a crowd as loud as what it was when the Eagles took the two late free throws.

It obviously helped because they missed them both," he added.

Next week the Buccs are on the road to Rockingham Flames on Saturday and Stirling Senators on Sunday.
