Saturday Night Review

Mandurah managed to get back into the winners circle with their 14 point win over the Stirling Senators. Stirling got the jump early with a three point lead at the first break. The Magic managed to peg the lead back to just 1 point at half time in what was turning out to be a tight battle. However the Magic showed their dominance in the third quarter with a 19-5 period to set up their 59-45 win. Gabriella Clayton was the game’s top scorer with 18 points including 10 rebounds. Alicia Rinaldi was the only other Stirling player with double figures with her 12 point and 7 rebound effort. Gemma Thomas was the leading scorer for the Magic with 15 points and 10 rebounds

The Metropolis Fremantle Cougars were in control for the entire match in their game against the Carpet Court Slammers. The Slammers did manage to peg the lead back to 7 at three quarter time only to have the Cougars pull away with a 16-4 fourth quarter with the final score being 69-60. Captain Emma Pass dominated for the Cougars with 28 points and 13 rebounds. For the Slammers it was again Kate Fielding leading the way with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Supporting her was Alex Kerr with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

The Redbacks missed the presence of Brook Hiddlestone who was unavailable for selection on the night. The Redbacks struggled early on with the Tigers registering a 17 point lead by the main break. However the Redbacks got some respectability back into the game with a 24-14 third quarter, reducing the lead to 7 points. Player/Coach Narelle Henry and Latoya Wallace combined for 13 points in the quarter to lead the way. However ultimately that was as close as they would get with the Tigers pushing the lead back out to 20 points in the fourth, registering a 74-59 win. Lynx players Ashley Gilmore & Kate Malpass lead the way for the Tigers with Gilmore scoring 25 points to go with her 19 rebounds and 4 steals. Malpass registered 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Wallace was the only Redback in double figures with her 15 points. The Tigers improved to 5-1 while the Redbacks increased the gap between 4th and 5th by dropping to 5-3.

The Australian Central Eagles struggled against the Skilled Goldfields Giants from the opening tip-off. After the first 12 minutes of play the Giants had established a 33-17 advantage and by half time they had extended their lead to 23 points. The Giants ended up taking out the game 87-71 as the Eagles again struggled to make their shots. Ryan Hulme top scored with 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Import Michael Haney also performed well with his 20 points and 12 rebounds, fellow import Alonzo Hird finished with 17 points and 18 rebounds. John Taylor and Jarrod Balcombe were the only Eagles in double figures with 19 and 17 points respectively.

The Dominos Geraldton Buccaneers bounced back after their first loss in a close game against the Eastern Suns. In a close encounter the lead changed several times, however the fourth quarter and ultimately the match belonged to the Buccs as they ran out 99-90 winners. Michael Le Blanc top scored with 46 points and 15 rebounds, fellow import Luke Meyer backed Le Blanc up with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Former Wildcat Adrian Majstravich finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds for the Suns while Austin Bruton chipped in with 18 points.

The Mandurah Magic almost got their first win of the season against the Stirling Senators. The Senators got out to an early five point lead at the first break, however by half time the scores were even at 41 each. Stirling looked like they had established control on the match in the third quarter when they pulled away to establish a 9 point three quarter time lead. However the home side was far from done, outscoring the Senators 26-27 in the last period to send the game into overtime at 94-94. Stirling managed to get the better of the home side in the extra five minutes, registering a 98-97 win. Carmie Olowoyo was the standout, top scoring for the game with 30 points and 17 rebounds. Travis Youngberg ably backed up Olowoyo with 21 points. Ben Caporn also registered 30 points to go with his 6 assists, Kane Thompson was the highest scorer of five other Mandurah players in double figures with his 16 point, 7 rebound effort.

The Telstra Shop Success Cockburn Cougars again showed their dominance on the competition with their 126-65 demolition of the Carpet Court Slammers that included a 43-12 third quarter. Import Bryce Birch dominated for the Cougars with 31 points, 17 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks. Other strong Cougar contributors were Andrew Musulin (22 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists) and Adam Becis (20 points & 9 assists). Import John Smith tried hard for the Slammers with his 28 points and 13 rebounds however he lacked any real support with Ty Alabakis the only other player in double figures with his 11 points.

The Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers and the Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks fought out an exceptional battle in front of a strong and raucous crowd that proved basketball was well and truly alive. The Tigers were the better of the two sides in the first half, registering a 14 point lead by half time. However a 28-17 third quarter from the visitors pulled the lead back to 3 points. At the end of regulation time both sides were locked at 84 each after Perth Guard Jarrad Prior hit a tough three point shot with 23 seconds to go. In the first over time the Redbacks appeared to have the game won when Ryan Neill  came alive  to hit a three point shot with 16 seconds to go giving Perth a 91-88 lead. However Ian Callaghen responded with his own three off the backboard just seconds latter again tying the match up and sending it into a second over-time. This time the Tigers were the better of the two sides with Ian Callaghen icing the game with two free-throws giving the Tigers a 4 point lead with only one play left for the Redbacks.

Import Robert Epps was the game’s top scorer with 34 points, an incredible 25 rebounds, 8 blocks and 5 assists. Backing him up was 17 year old Josh Johnson with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Ryan Neil top-scored for the visitors with 28 points and 8 rebounds. New import Chris Lynch hit 23 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in his first outing, however he fouled out with 7 minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
