Redbacks Women Win Double Header

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks women’s State Basketball League team won two vital matches against the Wanneroo Wolves 69 to 61 and last year’s premiers the Perry Lakes Hawks 66 to 62, which see them move up one place on the ladder to 5th place in the 12-team competition with a season record of 5 wins and 2 losses.

Guard Jacinta Bourne top-scored for the Redbacks against the Wolves with a game-high 24 points at an impressive field goal shooting percentage of 77% along with 7 rebounds, followed by forward Brooke Hiddlestone with 16 points along with 16 rebounds.  The Wolves top-scorer was Danielle Lipscombe with 17 points.

Hiddlestone top-scored in the game against the Hawks with 19 points along with 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals with guard Yasmin Seden the next highest scorer on 14 points.  Top-scorer for the Hawks was tough power-forward Renee Wharekura with 23 points along with 9 rebounds.

The Redbacks’ men lost both to the Wolves 89 to 96 and to the Hawks 98 to 111, but still remain in 10th place in the 14-team competition.  Guard Ryan Neill top-scored for the Redbacks against the Hawks with a game-high 27 points with point-guard Joel Wagner the next highest scorer on 16 points along with 6 assists.  The Wolves top-scorer was veteran centre Damian Matacz with 24 points along with 13 rebounds.

Neill was also the game-higher scorer against the Hawks with 28 points along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists, with Wagner again the next highest scorer on 21 points along with 5 rebounds and 9 assists.  Forward Martin Valhalla top-scored for the Hawks with 26 points.

The action continues this Saturday with the Redbacks playing the Willetton Tigers at the Willetton Basketball Stadium with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
