Eagles just hold off Mandurah in thriller

ADAM Caporn is one-up over brother Ben after East Perth began the State Basketball League season with a thrilling one-point win in overtime.

The Morley-based Eagles held off Mandurah to win 105-102 and give Adam, also the Perth Wildcats guard, a win in his first match in charge.

Ben, Mandurah’s captain, was influential with 26 points while Eagles recruit Stephen Weigh settled well with 23 points and seven rebounds in the match at the Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

A big crowd that included Perth Wildcats coach Connor Henry and skipper Paul Rogers, saw the lead change 11 times in a gripping match.

Overtime was required when Weigh drove to the top of the keyway and scored on the buzzer to level the scores 94-94 at full-time.

For the Eagles, Aaron Wigg had 14 points and seven rebounds, Israel Mohamed (14 points, eight rebounds), while the Magic’s Tom Remmerswaal had 20 points and 13 rebounds.

- The women’s team struggled without import Kelsey Maffin who is still waiting for a playing visa and went down to Mandurah 75-39.
