A Present of the Past – Rosie Tobin

Ahead of Women's Round in the SBL this weekend, Holly Coomey is here to provide her first 'A Present of the Past' offering, catching up with Irish compatriot Rosie Tobin.

HUNDREDS of players come through the SBL and we are about to find out what they get up to when they leave.

What ever happened to Rosie Tobin, that tall, dark-haired lass with the strong accent that played for Perry Lakes Hawks?

Rosie came to Perth in 2006 from Ireland on a working holiday visa but extended her stay for eight years!

After a few years playing Division 1 with the Hawks, she made the step up to SBL where she played as an import for the Lady Hawks.

She won the Most Improved Player in 2011 and featured in finals games with the Perry Lakes Hawks, unfortunately not grabbing a championship.

In 2014, just after receiving her citizenship, Rosie made the big move back to the beautiful Emerald Isle and therefore ended her outstanding SBL career.

She got married that year to her husband Julien and she was blessed to have four of her Hawks teammates make the long trip to Ireland for the wedding.

Not ready to give up on her basketball career just yet, Rosie played with Brunell, County Cork in the top Irish league for the 2014/15 season.

The following year she had a pretty good excuse to take a basketball hiatus as she was pregnant with her daughter Maggie Rose, now 11 months old.

Rosie and her husband Julien built a house together in Tipperary in 2016. And yes, it is a long way to Tipperary!

That same year, Rosie returned to basketball and played with the Tipperary Knights.

When asked to describe her SBL experience in three words, she chose 'commitment, memories and happiness.'

Her biggest highlight from playing in the SBL, she says, are the friendships she made with her fellow Lady Hawks teammates with whom she keeps in constant contact with, albeit on the other side of the world!

The SBL website and social media pages means Rosie can keep up to date with what is happening in the league and she hopes to bring Maggie Rose along to a Hawks game in the future.
