Week 13 Women's SBL Wrap

THE Joondalup Wolves won their 10th straight match on Sunday to remain on top of the Women's SBL while the Lakeside Lightning continued their march up the standings by handing the Willetton Tigers a second straight loss.

Those were just two of the results across Week 13 that began on Friday night with the Lakeside Lightning defeating the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers 91-75, the Perry Lakes Hawks beating the Print Sync South West Slammers 82-74 and the Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars downing the Schweigen Home Appliances East Perth Eagles 80-47.

Then on Saturday night, the Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars beat the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 88-82 and the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames downed he Bethanie Stirling Senators 78-58.

There were then another two matches on Sunday with the Lakeside Lightning make it three wins in-a-row beating the Schweigen Home Appliances East Perth Eagles 70-59 and the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves defeating the Perry Lakes Hawks 76-61.

Following Week 13 of the 2016 Women's SBL season, it's the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves sitting on top of the standings with a 11-1 record and a 10-game winning streak.

The Orange Autos Rockingham Flames (12-3) have now replaced the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers (11-3) in second position with the Perry Lakes Hawks (9-6) sitting fourth.

The Lakeside Lightning (8-6) have improved to fifth position ahead of the Texture WA Perth Redbacks (7-6), Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars (7-7) and Kalamunda Eastern Suns (6-7).

The Mandurah Magic (5-8) are just outside the top eight ahead of the Bethanie Stirling Senators (5-10), Print Sync South West Slammers (1-12) and Schweigen Home Appliances East Perth Eagles (1-14).

The Week 13 Team of the Week is made up of Sami Whitcomb of the Rockingham Flames, Deanna Smith from the Perry Lakes Hawks, Klara Wischer of the Joondalup Wolves, Candace Williams from the Cockburn Cougars and Carley Mijovic from the Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

Williams was named to the Team of the Week for a fifth time and earned Player of the Week honours. Her weekend started in the Cougars' win on Friday over the Eagles with 22 points, 23 rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Then in Saturday's win for Cockburn over Kalamunda, Williams finished with 34 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots shooting 9-of-19 from the floor and 15-of-17 from the free-throw line.

Whitcomb earned a spot in the Team of the Week for a sixth time in 2016 after leading the Flames to a win over the Senators with 32 points and nine rebounds shooting an efficient 12-of-21 from the field and 7-of-13 from three-point territory.

Smith was also named in the Team of the Week for a fifth occasion with her weekend starting on Friday night in the Hawks' win over the Slammers with 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists on shooting 5-of-11 from the floor, 2-of-3 from long range and 13-of-13 at the line.

The Hawks then went down to the Wolves on Sunday with Smith contributing eight points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Wischer earned a fifth nomination in the Team of the Week after helping the Lady Wolfpack to Sunday's win over Perry Lakes with 19 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and four steals shooting 8-of-15 from the floor.

Mijovic was named in the Team of the Week for a second time this season despite the Eastern Suns losing to the Cougars on Saturday night. She finished with 31 points, 17 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots and made 5-of-9 of her three-point attempts.

There were plenty other strong performers starting Friday night with Lakeside winning its first of two games for the weekend while handing Willetton back to back losses.

Devanny King delivered 24 points, 10 rebounds and six assists on Friday night for the Lightning against the Tigers shooting 7-of-14 from the field and 10-of-14 from the foul line.

Alison Schwagmeyer added 23 points, five assists and five steals, Courtney Byrnes 18 points and six rebounds, and Tia Ucich 13 points, six boards and four assists.

The Lightning also beat the Eagles on Sunday with Ashleigh Grant top-scoring with 17 points and 13 rebounds. King added 14 points and seven rebounds, Schwagmeyer 14 points, nine boards and four assists, Byrnes 10 points and eight rebounds, and Jess van Schie nine points, four assists and three boards.

Lara Napier top-scored for the Tigers against the Lightning on Friday with Zoe Harper adding 15 points and seven rebounds, Ebony Antonio 14 points and five assists, and Kate Malpass 13 points and seven assists.

The Hawks beat the Slammers on Friday night with Kate Anthony adding 14 points and six rebounds, Emily Burton 13 points and 11 boards, Lauren Jeffers 12 points, four rebounds and three assists and Sarah Donovan 10 points.

Then on Sunday against the Wolves, Anthony had 10 points for the Hawks, Jeffers nine points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals, Brieana Nolan eight points and Emily Burton eight.

Courtney Bayliss delivered 33 points and 11 rebounds for the Slammers on Friday night while Raya Thompson contributed 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Cougars beat the Eagles on Friday with not only Williams starring, but Cherridy Thornton contributing 15 points and five rebounds, and Taryn Priestly 14 points and five boards.

Then in Saturday's win over the Eastern Suns, Thornton contributed 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals, Chelsea Evans eight points, eight boards, three assists and two steals, and Nicole Roberts eight points and two assists.

Nicole Jorre St Jorre finished with 14 points, five steals and four rebounds on Friday for the Eagles with Gemma Houghton adding 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Eagles also went down to the Lightning on Sunday with Haylee DeSousa top-scoring with 13 points and four rebounds. Elainah Coffin added nine points and five boards, and Jorre St Jorre nine points, five steals, four rebounds and two assists.

The Eastern Suns went down to the Cougars on Saturday with Stacey Barr contributing 18 points and five rebounds, Natalia Soli'ai 11 points and nine boards, and Sabrina Jeridore 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Flames defeated the Senators on Saturday night with Jacinta Bourne contributing 14 points, 11 rebounds and three steals and Amanda Pether 11 points.

Amber Land top-scored for the Senators with 24 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots with Taylor Bestry contributing 11 points and three boards, and Lyndal Gardner eight points and four assists.

The Wolves defeated the Hawks on Sunday with Amy Kidner contributing 23 points and four rebounds, Nikita-Lee Martin 15 points and seven boards, and Ellyce Ironmonger eight points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
