Magic win in Mihovilovich's 350th (Week 1 Sunday SBL wrap)

THE Mandurah Magic women opened their SBL season beating the Perry Lakes Hawks to celebrate Casey Mihovilovich's 350th match in the league on Sunday afternoon.

The Magic beat the Hawks 75-58 in the only women's SBL match on Sunday while in men's games, the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles beat the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 118-93, the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers defeated the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 123-106 and the Mandurah Magic downed the Perry Lakes Hawks 129-119.

The East Perth Eagles men were coming off a season-opening loss to the defending champion Lakeside Lightning on Friday night, but rebounded emphatically on Sunday with a 25-point thumping of the Giants at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

It was Goldfields' second big loss in as many days following a 39-point loss to the Collie Crane Hire South Slammers on Saturday night.

Sunday Dech led the way for the Eagles against the Giants finishing with 25 points, 11 rebounds and four assists on the back of shooting 10-of-18 from the floor.

Kyle Armour also added 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as he recorded a triple-double while also shooting 4-of-7 from three-point territory.

Nikola Donlagic contributed 15 points, six rebounds and four assists as well for East Perth with John Taylor scoring 14 points, Jamie Barnett 13 and Austin Kisselev 10.

Tommy Hannon did all he could for Goldfields finishing with 26 points and 18 rebounds with Durran Blue also adding 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Geraldton bounced back from a loss to Rockingham on Friday night to beat Kalamunda by 17 points at Ray Owen Sports Centre on Sunday.

Bennie Lewis had a huge afternoon for the Buccaneers with 41 points and eight rebounds on the back of shooting 16-of-24 from the field and 7-of-12 from downtown.

Aaron Ralph also contributed 19 points and five boards for Geraldton with Carter Cook finishing with 18 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Adhar Mayen led the way for the Suns with 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists with Louis Timms adding 22 points and 12 boards, and Joel Questel 20 points, five steals and four assists.

Perry Lakes and Mandurah then both played their respective first games of the 2014 season with the Magic prevailing by 10 points over the Hawks at the WA Basketball Centre in the final game of Week 1 action in the SBL.

Four Mandurah players scored at least 20 points in the win with Daniel Thomas leading the way finishing with 38 points, nine assists and five rebounds.

Taylor Mullenax also finished with 34 points and seven rebounds with Paul Hafford adding 22 points and seven boards, Ben Smith 21 points and 12 rebounds, and Trent Gerovich 12 points, four assists and three boards.

Rob Cassir top-scored for Perry Lakes with 28 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Corey Easley also added 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds with Josh Garlepp contributing 23 points and Ben Purser 21 to go with 10 boards and six assists.

The only women's match-up on Sunday saw Perry Lakes and Mandurah play for the first time in the 2014 season.

It ended up with the Magic scoring an impressive 17-point victory over the Hawks at the WA Basketball Centre.

Mandurah was playing under new head coach Randy Miegel for the first time and there was every sign he will have a vastly improved line-up this season.

Mihovilovich was the star of the day finishing with 23 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and three steals on the back of 10-of-16 shooting from the field in what was her 350th SBL match.

Gemma Thomas also added 12 points and six rebounds for the Magic with Jorjah Smith contributing 11 points and six boards, and Gemma Thomas 10 points and six rebounds as well.

Jessie Clayton led the way for Perry Lakes with 15 points and five rebounds with Anna Kovats adding 11 points, five boards and three assists, and Rosie Tobin 10 points and five rebounds.
