Defending champs find some form (Friday Night Wrap)

Defending SBL champions the Cockburn Cougars got back on the winner's list on Friday night while the Perry Lakes Hawks sent off its coach with a thumping win over the Rockingham Flames.

The Cougars have had a horror championship defence to date but finally got back on the winner's list on Friday with a 92-89 win over the BOQ Perth Redbacks to improve to a 5-12 record.

Gavin Field hit 22 points for the Cougars while Brian Carlwell had a huge night with 16 points and 19 rebounds. David Reichel added 16 points, Damien Scott 13 and Grant Davey 11. Alex Prince also scored 10 points for Cockburn.

Bennie Lewis top-scored for the Redbacks with 24 points, five rebounds and four assists with Adam Johnston scoring 17 points, Justin Brown 16, Jarrad Prior 14 and Michael Vigor 11.

The Perry Lakes Hawks won its last game under departing new Townsville Crocodiles head coach Shawn Dennis, thumping the Rockingham Flames 110-76 at the WA Basketball Centre largely thanks to a massive 36-10 second period.

Michael Lay scored 21 points for the Hawks with Corey Easley adding 18 points, Ben Purser 17, Rob Cassir 14, Ryan O'Sullivan 13 and Tevin Jackson 10.

Steven Bennett scored 17 points for the Flames with Travis Moore adding 13 points and 11 rebounds. Brendan Della Maddalena also scored 12 points and Marko Deric 11.

The Stirling Senators won just its fourth game of the season upsetting the second-placed People's Choice Eagles with a 98-91 win.

Cory Cooperwood led the way for Stirling with 26 points and seven rebounds. Josh Throns had 20 points, Nikolas Iliadis 14, Jordan Wild 12 (and 16 rebounds) and Thomas Witts 11.

Drew Williamson had a huge night for the Eagles finishing with 32 points and eight rebounds. Tom Jervis and Nikola Donlagic added 13 points apiece, and Sunday Dech and Jarrod Balcombe 10.

The Cockburn Cougars women's team moved up to fifth position on the ladder with a 9-6 record after beating the 6-9 Perth Redbacks on Friday night.

Kate Fielding and Emma Pass both scored 22 points each for the Cougars with Stephanie Jones adding 13 points and 10 boards. Taryn Priestly added 10 points, six boars and five assists.

Marita Payne worked hard for the Redbacks with 17 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots. Tarsha Fletcher added in 16 points and Rachel Lisch 10 to go with five rebounds and five assists.

The Perry Lakes Hawks improved to a 6-6 record thumping the third-placed Rockingham Flames 87-51 set up by a dominant 25-10 opening quarter.

Gabriella Clayton scored 21 points for the Hawks with Belinda Mayger adding 14 points, Kate Anthony 12 and Sarah Donovan 12 to go with 16 rebounds and five blocked shots. Rebecca Boyanich also had nine points and 12 boards.

Samantha Whitcomb scored 11 points for Rockingham with Mary-Alice Telfer adding 10 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Tayla Lewis also had 10 boards.

At Morley the Stirling Senators had a convincing 70-45 win over East Perth.
