Magic hit back against Cougars (Saturday Night Wrap)

The Mandurah Magic men's SBL team bounced back from a loss on Friday night at home to the South West Slammers to beat the defending champion Cockburn Cougars on Saturday.

Mandurah bounced back in impressive fashion to improve to a 9-7 record by knocking off the struggling reigning champs, with the Cougars now slipping to 4-11 with their championship defence on tremendously shaky ground.

The Magic dominated the final quarter outscoring the Cougars 31-19 to come from behind at three quarter-time to win 90-83 at Wally Hagan Stadium.

Taylor Mullenax top-scored for Mandurah with 30 points while Ben Caporn added 18, Taylor Land 14 and Rhett Della Maddalena 10 to go with 11 rebounds.

Brian Carlwell hit 27 points while having 16 rebounds and five blocks for the Cougars with David Reichel scoring 19 points, Damien Scott 16 and Gavin Field 10 to go with eight boards.

The top-of-the-table Lakeside Lightning improved to 15-1 on the season winning a thriller 95-93 over the Goldfields Giants at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

Justin Cecil had a huge night for the Lightning top-scoring with 37 points. Ben Beran added 17 points, 12 rebounds and five assists in a strong all-round game while Brad Jackson finished with 14 points despite shooting 4-of-19 from the field, and 3-of-16 from three-point range.

Jarrad Prue also had 12 points, 23 rebounds and four blocked shots for Lakeside.

Jaycen Herring top-scored for Goldfields with 26 points and six assists with Markhuri Sanders-Frison adding 20 points and 18 rebounds, Lordan Franich 17 points and Kyle Keirnan 14.

The Geraldton Buccaneers scored an impressive road win beating the Willetton Tigers 105-90 at Willetton Basketball Stadium also on Saturday night.

Rob Kampman hit 33 points to go with 12 rebounds and four assists for the Buccaneers with Carter Cook adding 26 points, Daniel Thomas 17 and Matt Wundenberg 13.

Quinn McDowell scored 22 points and dished out eight assists while pulling in five rebounds for the Tigers with Kyle Armour scoring 19 points, Brandon Adams 15 and Nicholas Cody 11.

The East Perth Eagles consolidated second place on the men's SBL ladder with a hard fought 118-112 win over the Wanneroo Wolves at Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

Tom Jervis had a terrific night for the Eagles with 26 points, 18 rebounds, four blocks and two assists with Jarrod Balcombe adding 25 points, Drew Williamson 18, Michael Jones 17, Austin Kisselev 14 and Nikola Donlagic 11.

Damian Matacz hit 29 points to go with 14 rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Wolfpack with Trian Iliadis scoring 23 points, Seb Salinas 21 to go with eight boards and seven assists, Rob Huntington 17 points and Reece Maxwell 11.

The Perth Redbacks improved to a 9-7 record with a 99-81 win over the Stirling Senators at Warwick Leisure Centre.

Bennie Lewis scored 23 points and pulled in 10 boards for the Redbacks. Justin Brown added 19 points and nine rebounds, Michael Vigor 15 and 12, and Adam Johnston 17 points.

Cory Cooperwood scored 31 points for Stirling with Jordan Wild adding 19 points and Nikolas Iliadis 10.

The Cockburn Cougars women's team downed the Mandurah Magic 78-67 to improve to an 8-5 record on the season with Kate Fielding scoring 21 points. Stephanie Jones had a huge night with 19 points and 15 rebounds while Emma Pass added 14 points and Taryn Priestly 13.

Gemma Thomas hit 20 points for the Magic with Casey Mihovilovich adding 17 points and pulling in 10 rebounds for Mandurah.

The Wanneroo Wolves won its top against bottom clash against the East Perth Eagles 68-45 outscoring their opposition 39-20 in the second half.

Casey Lockwood top-scored for Wanneroo with 13 points with Nikita-Lee Martin adding 11 points, Shani Amos 11 and Meghan D'Arcy 11 to go with seven rebounds.

Denielle Lipscombe finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds for East Perth with Elizabeth Cooke adding six points and 11 boards.

The Perth Redbacks downed the Stirling Senators 58-53 with Tarsha Fletcher top-scoring for the Redbacks with 17 points on the back of shooting 4-of-7 from three-point territory. Marita Payne added 14 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Taylor Lilley scored 15 points and had five assists for the Senators with Amber Land contributing 14 points and 15 rebounds, and Tegan Walker 10 and six.
