Undermanned Grand Finalists go down (Friday night wrap)

An undermanned Rockingham Flames had a tough start to their season, the 2012 Women’s Grand Finalists going down 80-42 on the road to Willetton Tigers on the opening night of the season.

The Flames, who were without star import Emma Cannon and star Waves/AIS forward Darcee Garbin, were only down by 14 at the main break. However the second half proved to be a struggle offensively for the Flames who could only manage 18 points to the Tigers 42.

In the Men’s competition the Lakeside Lightning showed their intentions to the league with a massive 115-66 win over the Stirling Senators. Brad Jackson was the standout for the Lightning with 29 points on 7/13 shooting from three-point territory.

Wildcats Assistant Coach Shawn Dennis made his SBL debut, guiding the Perry Lakes Hawks to a 99-64 win on the road against the Kalamunda Eastern Suns. Wildcats Development Player Ben Purser was the standout with 24 points and 8 rebounds, while import Corey Easley had 18 points and 15 rebounds.

A fired up Willetton Tigers outfit opened up their season at home with a 121-97 win over a spirited Flames side. New Tigers imports Brandon Adams and Quinn Mc Dowell put on a show for their fans with 29 points each, Adams showing off his athleticism with six strong dunks.

In the Women’s competition Kalamunda Eastern Suns started the season in thrilling fashion with a 69-67 overtime win at home against the Perry Lakes Hawks. Lizel Buckley hit the winning shot with 12 seconds remaining.

Young Waves guard Adrienne Jones finished with 17 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals while fellow Waves player Natalie Burton was a standout for the Hawks with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Former WNBA player Taylor Lilley made her WSBL debut for the Senators but her 30 points and 8 rebounds was not enough to get the Senators over the line against Lakeside Lightning, going down 76-65.
