Cockburn hunt down rivals (Thursday night wrap)

Cockburn Cougars' impressive men's State Basketball League form continued thanks to a surprising turnaround that saw them beat local rivals Willetton Tigers in a 85-84 thriller.

The Tigers looked set to cruise to victory when they led by 10 points after eight minutes and 14 just before half-time but Cockburn rallied to score an unlikely victory thanks to Brian Carlwell.

The import centre was fouled with the Cougars down by one with just four seconds left and hit both his free-throws to earn his side its third consecutive win.

Carlwell had 23 points and 17 rebounds while fellow American Jeremiah Wilson had 22 points on debut to help hand Willetton its third loss from four games.

Lakeside Lightning remained a game clear at the top of the league after dominating Stirling Senators to win 116-83.

The Lightning were up by 32 halfway through the second quarter and were never challenged from there against a woeful Stirling side which was thrashed in the rebound battle 53-30 and struggled with basics like inbounding the ball.

Brad Jackson top-scored in Lakeside's fifth consecutive win with 26 points.

Tom Remerswaal was the unlikely hero as Mandurah Magic thrashed southern rivals South West Slammers 105-87.

The big man had 43 points to help Mandurah climb to fifth and hand the Slammers their fourth loss from five games.

In women's action, South West's unbeaten start continued with a 70-61 triumph against the winless Magic that gave the Bunbury side more wins than it had last season less than one month into the season.

Defending champion Willetton emphatically bounced back into form with a 100-70 thrashing of the Cougars, led by WNBL duo Jasmine Hooper (33 points) and Melissa Marsh (29).

And Lakeside remained unbeaten in second spot with a comfortable 79-60 win against the struggling Senators.
