Buccs set to get physical

SUN City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers guard Michael Lay is expecting tomorrow night's SBL clash against Willetton to be a tough physical encounter.

The Buccaneers will be hoping to rebound from last Sunday's disappointing loss to Mandurah Magic.

Willetton Tigers opened the new season with a 118-91 victory against the Stirling Senators.

Lay is weary of the Tigers' strike power on the court but urged his teammates to step up to the challenge.

"It will be a grind as both teams are trying to establish themselves as contenders this year, so it should be a very good test," he said.

"They have a good leader with point guard, Shamus Ballantyne returning, solid imports, and a good blend of Australian talent.

"We are not full strength yet which is a bonus, ideally we want to peak at the right time this season. Playing these tough teams early on is an advantage in terms of our season goals and development."

Ben Pepper and captain Mat Wundenberg are still nursing injuries but are expected to suit up for the game.

Pepper is battling a knee injury which restricted his game time last week while Wundenberg continues to feel the effects of off-season ankle surgery.

Dan Hunt Trophy winner Jason Bunter played during the team's opening road trip but coach Ray Evans said he will not suit up again.

It will be the first time the hometown Geraldton supporters see their Buccaneers squad.

The game also kicks of a run of three home games for the Buccaneers, who will play Lakeside Lightning next week and Goldfields Giants the week after.

Lay is confident the blue and gold outfit will start the home stand with a win.

"Overall the team is in good spirits. We were very pleased with our performances," he said.

"The team that is good defensively will certainly give their team the edge on Saturday. If we are able to refrain from picking up cheap fouls by playing defence with our feet instead of our hands then we can keep the momentum in our favour.

"I'm tipping the Buccs to win by seven points."
